My Teachers

Sri K. Pattabhi Jois

Guruji (as he was affectionately known) was a modern day yoga master with over 60 years teaching experience. When I first was privileged to meet him in 2001 (in London and then in Mysore, India) it was a powerful and magical experience, as if I had been plugged into the yoga mainline. Without his lifetime’s work we would not have this powerful yoga system. No-one practising Ashtanga today can do so without being connected in some way, through their teacher or their teacher’s teacher, to the legacy of this man.

R. Sharath Jois

For many years Sharath practised, assisted and worked alongside his Grandfather, later being appointed Director of the KPJ Ashtanga Yoga Institute. Today he commitedly continues the work of his Grandfather with a combination of devotion, hard work and humour.
I feel very privileged and grateful to have Sharath guide and supervise my practise when I am in Mysore. Under his direction the teachings of Ashtanga Yoga continue to spread and bloom while maintaining an authentic connection with the teaching tradition of parampara (lineage).

Hamish Hendry

Although I had already been introduced to Ashtanga Yoga, it was practicing daily with Hamish in London that really led me to deepen my practice and understanding of yoga.
Hamish’s patience, generosity and dedication to passing on the teachings of Ashtanga Yoga in their purist form, provided a rare and solid ground in the authenticity of this living tradition.
I learned so much from Hamish about the power of practice over and above the various trappings that have become attached to yoga in the West. He continues to hold that space for practitioners old and new on a daily basis.

Rolf Naujokat

Rolf is for me an exemplar of what it is to be a yogi. In the age in which yoga has become so much about show, Rolf is an example of yoga’s spirit.
My experiences with Rolf have taught me that yoga is about so much more that what you can do with your body, but is about how you are in the world.
He continues to teach, together with his wife Marci, in Goa, India.
